Green Issues

Green Tourism Statement

Welcome to Apple Barn or Apple Cottage we hope you enjoy your stay and will have time to read through our file. We have a wonderful rural setting close to the M2 motorway, Belfast airports, and Larne/Belfast sea ports. We care about our environment and strive to run our self-catering units as environmentally and energy efficiently as possible. Naturally we wish to make your stay an enjoyable and comfortable experience and encourage you to help us in our aim to minimise our environmental impact.

Here are some of the measures we have built in or introduced to reduce the impact of the cottages. We also want to encourage the local economy with similar aims  and there is information on food, transport and attractions.

·         High level of insulation and double glazing in the restored buildings

·         High efficiency condensing boiler with zone and thermostatic control.

·         Solar panel for hot water

·         Wood burning stove fuelled from windfall timber

·         Short flush toilets

·         A or more rated appliances

·         Recycling facilities

·         Supply eco friendly cleaning and washing products

·         Programme to install low E light bulbs

·         Promoting local sustainable products

·         We have planted native hardwood trees around the farm

·         Fresh eggs and pick your own vegetables on the farm when available

We are committed to continuous improvement in environmental matters.  We would ask you to support us in this and help us with any feedback.  Some areas where you can contribute are:

·         Switch off lights and appliances (TV etc.) when not required

·         Learn how to burn wood efficiently and reduce the oil heating load

·         Keeps doors and windows closed when heating is on

·         Please avoid excessive use of water

·         Use the clothes hanger rather than the tumble dryer

·         Help to recycle as suggested

·         Buy local produce

·         Try a day without the car
